Upcoming Concerts

Rick regularly hosts concerts featuring regional and national musicians coming through the Spokane area. The concerts are held right in the studio, which provides an intimate "house concert" experience and a chance to hear some truly outstanding musicians up close and personal, usually without a sound system. All the nuances of their acoustic instruments and soaring vocals and harmonies are just a few feet away, shared with a few dozen other friends and fellow music lovers. Friday, July 10, 7:30 PM:   Growling Old Men

Growling Old Men

The Growling Old Men don't consider themselves old, nor do they growl very much.  What they do is play acoustic music on mandolin, guitar, banjo, octave mandolin and vocals.  Playing an eclectic mix of music including bluegrass, Americana, folk, swing, and original songs, these guys have made fans of their music everywhere they go.  We're excited to have them back to Rick's studio for an intimate performance on Friday, July 10.

" "Breathing new life into old songs and tunes, these musicians approach their craft carefully; rearranging, substituting chords and whatever else it is they do. They write new tunes that sound like they've been around for years and arrange traditional ones in a way that makes them sound as fresh sounding as they ever were. John and Ben's gentle, laid back approach to Bluegrass and Old Time music combined with Leon and Dom's smooth arrangements of Irish and American tunes is a match made in Heaven. ~John Wirtz, Captain of Sore Fingers Summer Schools, Kingham, UK

Tickets are $15.

Saturday, July 11, 7:30 PM: Jackstraw

Longtime northwest favorites Jackstraw return for a show at Rick's on Saturday, July 11.  This hard-driving bluegrass band from Portland plays classics and originals with all the fire and intensity of a fast-moving freight train.  Tight harmonies, ferocious picking and an easy stage presence have earned this young band national recognition.  Come find out why Jackstraw is considered one of the finest bluegrass and Americana bands in the West.

Tickets are $10.

Monday, July 20, 7:30 PM:   Missy Raines and the New Hip

Missy Raines

Missy Raines is the most decorated bass player in the history of the International Bluegrass Music Association - with 7 Bass Player of the Year awards to her credit. A former member of the Claire Lynch Band, Missy Raines and Jim Hurst, Missy is one of the most popular figures in the bluegrass community, and a trailblazer in her field for as long as she’s been playing music.

Missy Raines and the New Hip bridges the musical worlds of newgrass, jazz, singer/songwriter and any others they take a notion to explore. Start with bluegrass virtuosity, add in a jazz-tinged groove and a song-driven sensibility, then dish it up with a hot band of young players. The band moves easily from fun, funky instrumentals to sophisticated songs of longing and hope.

"[Missy] Raines continues to reach far beyond the confines of bluegrass with her inventiveness... Her roots remain distinctively bluegrass, while her originals and arrangements reflect her eclectic taste." - Strings Magazine

Tickets are $20.
